Update March 2021 - The Summer Solstice now holds the heady promise of gathering freely, giving us confidence that our rescheduled events may now proceed as planned. We will of course gauge this with care, following guidelines as they are announced and aim to confirm mid May.
*We currently have one vacancy remaining as we have a guest who is happy to share a twin room, please do e-mail if you would like to book! Further details below
The Unwinding is a pillow book, in the ancient tradition of Sei Shonagan, a book to tuck up your sleeve, in a pocket, under a pillow, containing fragments of dreams. Designed to be a portal, a talisman, it invites readers to enter its world, through word and image.
Sleep, peaceful sleep had to be an essential element of our event, and so we have planned an idyllic retreat which can be as relaxing or as creative as you wish...
We would like to invite you to unwind with us at Northmoor House. Sensitively restored and little altered since Victorian times the house exudes a relaxed atmosphere, where even the wild deer are known to sleep on the lawn. Surrounded by sessile oaks and nestled in the Barle Valley, a beautiful riverside walk leads you to Dulverton and Seven Fables.
Tuesday 6th July 2021
Guests are invited to arrive from 3pm, with afternoon tea served at 4pm
6pm Time to relax and explore your surroundings
8pm Light and delicious buffet supper, followed by a bedtime reading in the lounge with Jackie Morris
Wednesday 7th July 2021
8am - 10am Leisurely breakfast, guests to be presented with a special edition entitled The Silent Unwinding to inspire their own writing.
11am - 12pm Creative writing workshop with a difference. Join Jackie in the kitchen and help prepare the day's lunch. Jackie firmly believes in the importance of cooking together; a relaxed atmosphere often nurtures the most inspired thoughts and the conversation will naturally flow. Space for this session is limited so please do say when booking if you would like to participate. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis.
Alternatively, you can join the 'word harvesting walk' with Christopher Jelley who will lead you through the gardens and surrounding woodland to the beech tree - an inspiring location with views through the tree canopy to the river below.
You can of course, if you wish simply spend the morning reading, writing, drinking tea and relish in the idyllic setting. There are hammocks to seek out and a labyrinth to tread softly.
Both workshops aim to help you find your own personal approach to writing, not everyone wishes or aims to be published but the practice of writing and recording your ideas, dreams and daily life can be a joyful and relaxing process.
1pm Vegetarian lunch
The afternoon is free to unwind as you choose - find a shady spot to snooze, read or write.
If you are feeling more adventurous perhaps take a stroll through the woods into Dulverton, or head out in the car to explore the moor and discover the ancient clapper bridge at Tarr Steps.
4pm - 5pm Tea and cake will be served in the garden for those who have chosen to remain and relax at the house. This will also be an opportunity to share your Silent Unwinding with other guests.
7pm The Unwinding Supper. A three course, colourful, vegetarian supper prepared by our chef and served in the dining room. An evening of tale telling and conversation with Jackie Morris, followed by a bedtime tale to lull you into the realm of The Unwinding....
Thursday 8th July 2021
8am - 10am Leisurely breakfast and farewells, guests to depart by 11am.
The Seven Fables team will be on hand throughout your stay, the house will be filled with fresh flowers and bowls of fruit and we will also have our own 'in house cook and house keeper.' We wish to create a shared, informal yet creative space at Northmoor House and naturally we want your time with us to be as relaxing and enjoyable as possible.
