The Walking Book Club

If you love reading and enjoy walking then this could be just the book club you have been seeking...

Joining the group is free and new members are always made welcome. We do request however that you purchase your copy of the selected title from Seven Fables by way of booking your place and 'purchasing a ticket.'

We depart promptly at 2pm from outside the shop where we return by 4.30pm at the latest.

Please note a level of walking fitness is required, do wear suitable footwear and dress appropriately as we walk in all weathers. Do bring a drink and a snack to enjoy, a flask is a good idea when the weather is cooler, and something to keep your bottom dry as we often sit on a mossy bank or fallen log!

Happy & sociable dogs are welcome. We kindly request short leads only, however once in the woods they may roam free, kept under close control. *Dogs are not permitted on our special event walks and talks - if in doubt please do ask.

If you require accommodation Knapp House and Mounsey End offer a 10% discount to guests who are staying in order to attend our Walking Book Club.

A Winter Book By Tove Jansson

Drawn from youth and older age, and spanning most of the twentieth century, this newly translated selection provides a thrilling showcase of the great Finnish writer’s prose, scattered with insights and home truths. It has been selected and is introduced by Ali Smith, and there are afterwords by Philip Pullman, Esther Freud and Frank Cottrell Boyce.

The Winter Book features thirteen stories from Tove Jansson’s first book for adults, The Sculptor’s Daughter (1968) along with seven of her most cherished later stories (from 1971 to 1996), translated into English and published here for the first time.

“As smooth and odd and beautiful as sea-worn driftwood, as full of light and air as the Nordic summer. We are lucky to have these stories collected at last.” Philip Pullman

Author Visit

Celebrate the arrival of spring with writer and editor Katharine Norbury

This anthology gathers the voices of women from the fourteenth to the twenty-first centuries whose subject is the natural world in Britain, Ireland and the outlying islands of our archipelago. Alongside the traditional forms of the travelogue, the walking guide, books on birds, plants and wildlife, Women on Nature embraces alternative modes of seeing and recording that turn the genre on its head.

Women on Nature presents a fresh vision of the natural world and is of unique importance in terms of women's history and the history of writing about nature.

Many of the authors featured in this beautiful anthology have written books that our Walking Book Club has read and enjoyed over the years, including Kitty Aldridge, Kathleen Jamie and Helen Macdonald.
